Applications to design

Many of the pictures in this book look strikingly similar to artistic designs of various styles. Probably this reflects not so much a similarity in underlying rules, but rather similarity in features that are most noticeable to the human visual system. Note that square grids of colored cells as in the cellular automata in this chapter can be used quite directly as weaving patterns. (See also page 929.)
