A Unique Educational & Career Opportunity with Stephen Wolfram

A unique opportunity to do original research at the frontiers of science, the Wolfram Science Summer School teaches about 40 students from a diverse range of scientific backgrounds how to use Stephen Wolfram's A New Kind of Science and the Wolfram Language to implement projects in their fields of interest. Weili Luo received her PhD in physics from UCLA. She is currently a professor of physics at the University of Central Florida. Her main research interests are to understand fundamental properties and applications of complex systems and enabling nanostructures.

Mobile Automata with Long-Range Interaction

Project

In contrast to CA where all cells in a row are updated in parallel, in a mobile automata (MA) only the single active cell is updated at each step. The evolution of an MA and direction of the active cell's motion are determined by the color of both of the active cell and its neighbors. So far all MA are defined by the interactions between nearest neighbors, i.e. the short-range interaction. In this project, I plan to explore the effect of long-range interaction (LRI) on MA by including cell(s) P distance away from the active cell with P > 2. The initial ideas about introducing the LRI are:

  1. Introducing a uniform column some fixed distance away from the initial position of the head
  2. Introducing the second type of flexible uniform column with some fixed distance away from the moving head.
