NKS Summer School Schedule Outline

Before the Summer School
Students will be provided with Mathematica and NKS Explorer software
Students are expected to have read the NKS book
Students will be provided with Mathematica self-training tools and exercises
Advisor assigned for each student

Week One
Basics of NKS (lectures by Stephen Wolfram and other instructors)
Class research project (live computer experiment led by Stephen Wolfram)
Project selection with Stephen Wolfram and advisor
Tutorials on using Mathematica for NKS

Week Two
In-depth lectures on pure NKS
Lectures on application areas (physics, biology, social science, etc.)
Lectures on historical context and philosophical implications
Special-topic lectures by Stephen Wolfram (previous topics have included "Science-based careers," "How to pick a research project," "How to write a paper," and "How to start a technology company," as well as outlines of physics, aspects of scientific history, and much more)
Ongoing project meetings

Week Three
Continuing NKS lectures
Final preparation for presentations
Student presentations

An important part of the Summer School is ongoing informal discussions, ranging broadly over NKS, science, technology, and implications.

After the Summer School, many students continue their projects, often developing them into published papers or working them into theses. The Summer School instructors maintain an informal network of Summer School students.
