Chapter 8: Implications for Everyday Systems

Section 1: Issues of Modelling

Experiences of modelling

Over the course of the past 25 years I have constructed an immense number of models for a wide range of scientific, technical and business purposes. But while these models have often proved extremely useful in practice, I have usually considered them intellectually quite unsatisfactory. For being models, they are inevitably incomplete, and it is never in any definitive sense possible to establish their validity.
